Paonia, Colorado & the West Elk Loop- 20 miles
Located a mile from the end of Stevens Gulch, a visit to Paonia is a must for any visitor who appreciates original American towns.  Paonia was founded in the 1880’s by a fruit farmer; today Paonia is a melting pot of farmers, artists, craft folks, miners and mountain men.  The town enjoys an appellation climate, growing cherries, apples, grapes, peaches & nectarines.  Tour taste at one of the many wineries or go “fruit & vegetable stand” hopping.  Mount Lamborn, at a towering 11,400 feet elevation shelters Paonia at her base.  Behind the mountain extends the West Elk Wilderness, Colorado’s 5th largest wilderness!  Take a hike on one of the one hundred and sixty miles of trails that extend across the wilderness with peaks ranging from 7,500 to 13,000 feet elevation.  Paonia is part of the West Elk Loop a National Forest Scenic By-Way that traverses some of Colorado’s most magnificent national forests and mountains, a vacation itinerary in itself!

Grand Mesa & Paonia Access 20-30 minutes
